The squeaky wheel gets the date..!

Posted by abbanabba | 23 Oct, 2008

So what better way to celebrate your birthday than getting so drugged up that you can't remember a thing and then waking up a day or so later in a strange bed with no recollection of what went on? Well that's exactly what I've got planned for my 37th... only it's probably not going to be nearly as much fun as it sounds! I'm actually scheduled to have my valve surgery!!! Surprised  Yep, 10th December!!

I don't think the poor lady who gave me the date really knew what to say when I told her it would be my b-day (heh heh). She had been so very lovely all those times I kept ringing, harassing them for a date, so I really felt for her - however when she offered to reschedule, I assured her that after waiting 5 years for this thing to happen and having been told it would be Oct/Nov this year, I was more than happy to take it and I really couldn't ask for a better birthday present (clearly I need help! Wink).

Personally I have a sneaking suspicion the surgeon was "getting his own back" for all those phone calls (!) and was thinking "how bad do you want it?.... really?.... how about for your birthday?... mwahahahahahaha.....!!!!" because I'm pretty sure we discussed my birthday at my appointment with him at the start of the year and how I'd be happy if it happened before then. Hmmmmmmmm.....!!!!

Still, it's a date and it's set and I'm very happy. I'm sure at some point I'll start freaking out about it all, but then I've also had 5 years of living in limbo, feeling like crap, and working through all the "surgery anxiety" issues, so maybe it will only hit me on the day.

But the thought of all those impending "bad hair days"...... now that's scary!!!! Laughing

    Valve Stuff

Is the new valve Porcine in nature or not?
What is the life span of the valve?
Are they going to find one big enough to suit your large loving heart? (makes Pharlaps heart look like a piece of crap)

    PVR

Anna, as I have said, I was so glad after my PVR, because 5 weeks post-surgery, I had so much energy!!! And I walked a mile in only 25 minutes, 5 weeks post-surgery (I forget how that calculates to km).
As you're well aware, it's normal to feel apprehensive - after all, the surgeons will be going to the heart of the matter (pun intended!).
In spite of your other defects, I believe and hope that you will feel soooo much better! It's nice to be able to breathe, first of all, and not to have pain, and to be able to get up and do something! (As LaFemme says, --- do something!)
I'm sorry you had to wait such a long time, but here you are, almost "on top" of it - yay!!
What kind of work do you plan to return to?
I've put you on my personal calendar, so I'll remember to remember you that day, and may God bless, and help you to finally feel more like yourself very soon after the surgery!!
    Best to you!

    What valve?

The valve is going to be a little piggy valve! I'm thinking of calling it "Babe" (la la laaaaa!!).... I'm also wondering if I get to keep the rest of the pig - sure could be handy that close to Christmas lunch (I do so love my crackling!! heh heh heh ).

The life-span is predicted to be somewhere around 10-15 years, but I guess it really will depend on many factors. I hope I can squeeze a good 20-25 years from it by being very nice to it with lots of good healthy food and exercise.

And thanks for that lovely little song..! : )

    Hi Connie

Yep - it's great to have a date (and still on a high from that - so sad!!).

Meanwhile I'm hoping next year I can concentrate on building my energy and strength back to where it was 6-7 years back and maybe do some part-time work (probably something administrative), but after that I want to study dietetics at uni to become a dietician. I'd like to specialise in people like us, who are physically limited and need to keep their weight in check. I'd also like to educate kids and their parents on healthy "fun" eating, since we seem to be leading the world in the obesity race :(

Will take a few years, but I think it will be very rewarding (and it pays well too!!! heh heh).
